no city is just a city. it has backwaters, ulcers, flophouses, ghettos, garbage, murders, the rich, art, music, good restaurants, everything but the humanity they are suppose to represent. cities are machines to control behavior and to set the bar for appropriate high behavior. they are the machines that kill life through ultra forms of conformity. so these marginals floating in boats on canals represent an alternative life of possible freedom. note: someone trims evenly the branches of the willow trees. who does that, and why?
